Film maker Kevin Smith confirmed Thursday morning via social media that he will begin shooting his new movie MallBrats at Exton Square Mall beginning in January 2016. The film is the long awaited sequel to his 1995 comedy Mallrats which starred an ensemble cast including Ben Affleck and Shannen Doherty.
After months of scouting locations for the film, Smith had originally hoped to shoot the movie at Granite Run Mall in Delaware County, but plans fell through. Granite Run Mall was set for demolition beginning in the fall, and Smith could not start shooting the film until January. Rumors swirled in recent weeks that he was looking at Exton Square Mall and this morning he tweeted confirmation that indeed, he was.
“We found our MALL, y’all! This January, @ExtonSquareMall in Exton, PA will star #Mallrats 2!” Smith said on his Twitter page.
Smith, who rose to fame in the mid-nineties with his cult classic grunge-era films Clerks and Mallrats, which he wrote, directed and acted in, has long been a favorite amongst “Generation-Xers.” Known for his witty dialog and relatable characters, Smith seemed to carve out a knack onscreen for spotlighting the youth culture in suburban settings.
Earlier this year, Smith confirmed that all 18 of the original stars from Mallrats will return to reprise their characters in MallBrats, including Shannen Doherty, Jason Lee, Jeremy London and Joey Lauren Adams. Smith himself, along with Jason Mewes, will also return as his two most loved characters, Jay and Silent Bob.
